Pop-Up Blockers and Permissions That Interrupt Posting
Pop-up blockers and site permissions that interrupt Marketplace posting: file pickers, login dialogs, camera prompts, and how to set Chrome without opening the floodgates.
The rep clicks to add photos. Nothing happens. He clicks again. Still nothing. He reloads Facebook, reinstalls the extension, and announces that uploads are "down." A small icon in the address bar had blocked the file picker or a Facebook dialog. The listing is still in the queue. The photos are still on the desktop. The only thing that failed was permission to open a window.
Pop-up blockers and permissions that interrupt posting are easy to miss because Chrome's UI for them is a tiny glyph, not an error in the posting panel. Dealership PCs make it worse: IT policies, extra blocker extensions, and locked-down camera/mic settings all sit on top of Facebook's own dialogs. This article is the map of which prompts posting actually needs, how to allow them for facebook.com without turning the browser into an open carnival, and how to train reps to look at the address bar before they rebuild the tool.
PostToMarket is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Meta. Permission labels in Chrome change. Follow what you see in Site settings, and check current Marketplace flows if a step does not match the page.
Pop-Up Blockers and Permissions That Interrupt Posting: What Actually Gets Blocked
Not every blocked dialog is a "pop-up" in the advertising sense. Chrome groups several interruptions together from the operator's point of view.
Pop-ups and redirects
Marketplace and login flows sometimes open an auxiliary window or a permission bubble. A blocker that is set to hard-stop all pop-ups will swallow:
- Some Facebook login or confirmation dialogs.
- Windows that a posting extension needs to complete a step.
- OAuth-style prompts if you ever sign into a tool in the browser.
If the click "does nothing," look for a blocked-pop-up icon in the address bar before you reload.
File site access (photos)
Photo attachment is a file picker, not a banner ad. It can still be interrupted by:
- A blocker extension that kills the file input.
- Chrome not allowed to open local files in that context.
- A modal sitting behind the main window.
This is one of the most common "photos won't upload" reports that is not a photo-size problem.
Notifications, camera, and microphone
Vehicle posting does not require the floor PC to spam desktop notifications, and most listing flows do not need camera or mic. Granting those globally "so posting works" is the wrong lesson. Grant only what the current step asks for, for facebook.com, and deny the rest.
Third-party cookies and embedded widgets
Aggressive privacy settings can block parts of Facebook that live on related hosts. The symptom is a half-drawn Composer or a photo widget that never attaches. This overlaps with Conflicting Browser Extensions That Break Facebook Pages. Disable the extra privacy extension in the posting profile rather than turning off all browser security.
Clipboard prompts
Some tools ask to read the clipboard for VIN or stock number paste. If you did not expect a clipboard prompt, deny it until you know which software asked. Do not click Allow on every prompt to make it go away.
How to Set Permissions So Pop-Up Blockers Do Not Interrupt Posting
Do this in the posting Chrome profile, for facebook.com, not as a global Chrome default for every site on the PC.
Address-bar first aid (the 15-second fix)
When a click does nothing:
- Look at the right side of the address bar for a blocked pop-up, puzzle-piece, or camera icon.
- Open it.
- Allow the dialog for this site if it is Facebook and you initiated the click.
- Retry once.
If you skip the address bar and reload, you often lose the blocked-dialog memory and start over.
Site settings for facebook.com
In Chrome Site settings for Facebook, a conservative posting profile looks like this:
| Permission | Posting profile stance |
|---|---|
| Pop-ups and redirects | Allow for facebook.com if dialogs are getting swallowed; do not set to Allow on every site |
| Images | Allow (a block here makes Marketplace look empty) |
| JavaScript | Allow (a block here breaks the page and any extension) |
| Notifications | Ask or Block; not required to submit a listing |
| Camera / microphone | Ask or Block unless a specific step requires it |
| File editing / folder access | Allow the picker when you are attaching listing photos |
You are not trying to make Facebook louder. You are trying to let a user-initiated file picker complete.
Turn off extra blocker extensions in this profile
Chrome's built-in pop-up control plus a third-party blocker plus a "Facebook cleaner" is three vetoes on the same click. For posting, one control is enough. Isolation steps match the extension-conflict article: disable extras, test a manual Marketplace photo add, then test the posting tool.
Managed Chrome: get an exception, do not fight the policy silently
If IT locked pop-ups to Block for all sites, Marketplace posting from that browser may not be viable. Ask for an exception for the Facebook origins you use, scoped to the posting OU or the posting profile. Silent workarounds (personal laptops, random extra browsers) create session problems that are worse than the original block.
After you allow something, finish the listing
A permission grant that is followed by walking away leaves a half-open Composer and a confused next user. Allow, attach photos, complete the unit or cancel cleanly.
Training Reps to Diagnose a Dead Click
Put this on the same laminated card as session rules.
The dead-click script
- Did I click something that should open a window, a file picker, or a permission bubble?
- Is there an icon in the address bar?
- Am I in the correct Chrome profile?
- Did a blocker extension just toast a notification I ignored?
If all four are fine and the native Marketplace form also cannot add photos, you have a page or cache problem, not a permission problem. Continue with Chrome Extension Not Loading on Facebook: A Checklist.
What associates must not do
- Must not set Chrome to allow pop-ups on every site.
- Must not download a second pop-up blocker to "fight" the first one.
- Must not grant camera and mic to facebook.com because photos were blocked; those are different permissions.
Manager spot check
Once a week, sit at a shared posting PC and start a dummy listing far enough to open the photo picker (do not publish junk). If the picker is blocked, the last IT policy or the last installed extension has drifted. Fix it before Saturday.
For a clean baseline after you change permissions, the install sequence in PostToMarket Chrome Extension Setup Guide for Dealership Teams is the right re-test: one profile, one extension, one verified post.
Edge Cases
Multiple monitors and the dialog is off-screen
Especially after a laptop dock change, the file picker is open on a monitor that is now unplugged. Dead click, no address-bar icon. Alt-tab, or move windows with the keyboard, before you change permissions.
Windows-level blockers
Some "PC optimizer" tools and antivirus suites include their own pop-up shielding. Chrome Site settings will look fine and dialogs will still die. Check the suite's browser protection list.
Autoplay and sound
Unrelated, but reps sometimes enable everything in Site settings while hunting for a photo prompt. Do not use that as an excuse to turn on sound autoplay and notifications for all of Facebook on a floor PC.
Guest mode and other users
Guest windows ignore your carefully set site permissions. Do not post from Guest. Use the named posting profile.
How PostToMarket Automates This
Pop-up blockers and permissions that interrupt posting break the last inch of the workflow: the Facebook dialog and the photo picker. PostToMarket cannot override Chrome's address bar, but it keeps the listing payload ready so a permission fix is not also a data-entry redo.
Photos and copy are chosen on purpose, not rebuilt from memory
- Facebook photo picker once the picker is allowed to open.
- AI-generated titles and descriptions from specs, editable before posting, so you are not drafting in a window that might be blocked.
- Vehicles already in inventory via CSV/Excel import or capture from auction and wholesale sites.
Submit stays paced after a delay
- Chrome extension posts one vehicle at a time with human-like delays.
- Server-enforced daily limits and delays so a morning of fighting dialogs does not become an afternoon burst.
- Sign in with email (no API keys) in the same profile that has the correct site settings.
If this PC stays blocked, the queue still exists
- Per-rep queues and manager assignment.
- Team queue view to release a claim.
- Mobile dashboard to reorder work while IT grants the facebook.com pop-up exception.
- Statuses draft, posting, posted, sold, failed so you know whether the unit ever reached Facebook.
Fix the dialog. Then post the next queued unit. Do not invent a second browser stack.
Allow the Dialog You Clicked, Not Every Dialog on the Internet
Pop-up blockers and permissions that interrupt posting are usually a ten-second address-bar problem dressed up as a system outage. Teach the floor to look at the icon, allow facebook.com in the posting profile, and keep extra blocker extensions off that profile.
When dialogs work, the constraint should be inventory quality and cadence, not Chrome. PostToMarket holds unlimited vehicles, builds listing copy you review, and submits through a signed-in extension. Starter is $59 per month for a single-login operator. Dealership is $299 per month for up to 13 logins when each person needs a profile with the right permissions and their own queue.
