Chrome Extension Not Loading on Facebook: A Checklist

A practical checklist when a Chrome extension is not loading on Facebook: profile, permissions, conflicts, cache, and the order to test so reps get back to posting.

Chrome Extension Not Loading on Facebook: A Checklist

The extension icon is in Chrome. It was working yesterday. This morning a rep opens Facebook Marketplace, clicks the toolbar, and nothing happens: no panel, no prompt, no error. He reloads. He clicks harder. He announces that "the software is down," which on a sales floor is enough to halt posting for the entire desk while three people restart browsers that were not the problem.

A Chrome extension not loading on Facebook is almost never a mystery once you test in a fixed order. It is a profile problem, a site-access problem, a conflict, a stale cache, or a Facebook page that has not finished loading. Treating it as a vendor outage wastes the hour you should have spent on aged inventory. This checklist is the sequence a used-car manager or internet director can run in minutes without guessing.

PostToMarket is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Meta. Facebook's layout and Marketplace flows change. If a step below disagrees with what you see on screen, follow the current Chrome and Facebook interface, not a memorized click path.

Why a Chrome Extension Is Not Loading on Facebook

Extensions do not "run on the internet." They run in a specific Chrome profile, against a specific origin (facebook.com and related hosts), with a specific set of permissions, on top of whatever other extensions and policies that computer already has. Any one of those layers can fail while the icon still looks installed.

The failure modes look the same from the chair

Reps describe all of these as "it's not loading":

  • The toolbar icon is gray and does nothing on facebook.com.
  • The icon is present but the panel is blank.
  • The extension works on the dashboard and does nothing on Marketplace.
  • It works in one Chrome window and not in another.
  • It worked on the laptop and never appears on the desk PC.

Those are different faults. A checklist that starts with "reinstall everything" will occasionally luck into a fix and will usually destroy a working profile.

What you should assume first

Assume the simplest true thing:

  1. The rep is in the wrong Chrome profile.
  2. The extension does not have permission to run on Facebook.
  3. Another extension is blocking scripts or pop-ups on Facebook.
  4. The Facebook tab is a stale or half-loaded document.
  5. Chrome itself is old, managed, or waiting on a restart after an update.

Only after those should you reinstall. The PostToMarket Chrome Extension Setup Guide for Dealership Teams covers a clean first install. This article is the diagnostic you run when an existing install goes quiet.

Chrome Extension Not Loading on Facebook: The Diagnostic Checklist

Work top to bottom. Stop when the panel appears. Do not skip to step eight because it feels more decisive.

1. Confirm you are in the intended Chrome profile

Look at the avatar in the top-right of Chrome. If it says "Person 1" or "Default" and the rep has a named profile, you are already in the wrong place. Extensions are installed per profile. An icon you remember from yesterday may not exist in this window.

  • Switch to the named profile used for posting.
  • Confirm the PostToMarket extension is listed under chrome://extensions in that profile.
  • Confirm the extension is signed in with the rep's own email.

If the extension is missing from this profile, install it here. Do not copy a profile folder from another user as a shortcut.

2. Confirm the tab is actually facebook.com

Extensions that act on Marketplace need a Facebook tab, not a bookmark to a dashboard, not Messenger.com in isolation if that is not the host you trained on, and not a Facebook tab that redirected to a checkpoint or login interstitial. If Facebook is asking for a password, an identity check, or a "review your information" step, finish that first. An extension cannot load on a page that is not the page.

3. Check site access for the extension

In Chrome's extension details, confirm it is allowed to run on Facebook. Managed dealership PCs sometimes reset this after a policy refresh. If site access is "On click" and nobody clicked, the extension will sit idle. For posting tools, the working setting is the one that allows the extension to run on the Facebook hosts you actually use. If IT has locked this, you will not fix it from the toolbar; you need the policy owner.

4. Reload the Facebook tab once, then restart Chrome once

A single reload clears a half-built Marketplace page. A single Chrome restart clears an extension that loaded before Facebook's current layout finished. Two restarts, five reloads, and a reboot of Windows are not a better test. They are stalling.

5. Disable other extensions that touch Facebook

Ad blockers, coupon injectors, script blockers, "Facebook cleaners," screenshot tools, and aggressive privacy extensions are the usual conflicts. Disable them for this profile, reload facebook.com, and test again. Isolation steps are in Conflicting Browser Extensions That Break Facebook Pages. Do not disable the posting extension while testing the others.

6. Clear cache for Facebook only, not the entire browser if you can avoid it

A corrupted cached copy of Marketplace assets can leave the DOM in a state the extension cannot bind to. Prefer clearing cached files and images for the Facebook site rather than wiping every cookie in the profile. When a stall is clearly cookie-related (login loops, old Composer state), follow Clearing Cache and Cookies When Posting Tools Stall instead of this lighter step.

7. Test in a fresh Chrome profile

Create a temporary profile, install only the posting extension, sign in with email, sign into Facebook, and open Marketplace. If it loads there, the problem is the original profile (extensions, cache, or policy), not "Facebook is down" and not "the vendor vanished." If it fails in a clean profile too, look at Chrome version, network filters, and whether facebook.com is even fully reachable.

8. Reinstall the extension last

Remove it from chrome://extensions, restart Chrome, install again, sign in with email. Reinstalling first is how you lose a working sign-in and still have the same site-access policy blocking you.

What the Checklist Is Not Telling You to Do

Some floor folklore makes this worse.

Do not mix this with a Facebook password reset

A missing extension panel is not a locked Facebook account. Resetting the password while you are diagnosing Chrome will sign the person out everywhere and create a new problem on every other device.

Do not switch browsers mid-diagnosis

If the extension is a Chrome extension, testing in Edge or Firefox tells you nothing about this install. "I'll just post in the other browser" is a different risk, covered elsewhere in this series. Stay in Chrome until you know why Chrome failed.

Do not share a working profile as the fix

Copying a manager's Chrome profile onto a rep's machine, or having the rep post from the manager's already-signed-in window, hides the fault and creates a session-mixing fault. Fix the rep's profile.

Do not declare a Meta outage from one PC

If two other reps are posting from their laptops, this computer has a local problem. If nobody at the store can load facebook.com, that is network or a platform incident, and your checklist is the wrong tool.

A Manager's Five-Minute Triage Script

When a rep says the Chrome extension is not loading on Facebook, ask these questions in order. Write the answers down. You will need them if you email support.

  1. Which Chrome profile name is in the top-right corner?
  2. Is facebook.com fully loaded, or is there a checkpoint, login wall, or error?
  3. Does chrome://extensions show the posting extension enabled in this profile?
  4. Which other extensions are enabled in this profile?
  5. Did this machine recently get an IT image, Chrome update, or new "privacy" extension?
  6. Does a clean test profile work?

Then pick one action: switch profile, grant site access, disable a conflicting extension, or follow the cache article. One action. Recheck.

When to involve IT versus when to handle it on the floor

Involve IT when Chrome is managed, when site access resets after every reboot, when facebook.com is filtered, or when every profile on the machine fails including a clean one. Handle it on the floor when the rep was in Default, had an ad blocker, or had a stale tab. Sending every blank-panel report to IT trains the floor to wait instead of looking at the avatar in the corner.

How PostToMarket Automates This

A Chrome extension not loading on Facebook stops the entire posting motion if the only plan was "sit at Marketplace and type." PostToMarket cannot override a blocked host or a disabled extension, but it shrinks the blast radius: the queue, the copy, and the vehicle data wait in the dashboard while you fix the browser.

The extension's job is narrow on purpose

  • Sign in with email (no API keys). If the panel is blank, you are not hunting for a lost key file.
  • Posts one vehicle at a time to Marketplace, and can also post to the user's Facebook profile and Facebook groups, with human-like delays.
  • Server-enforced daily post limits and delays so a morning of troubleshooting does not turn into an afternoon of burst posting to "catch up."

Work that does not depend on the Facebook tab

  • Unlimited vehicles in inventory on every plan, with statuses (draft, posting, posted, sold, failed) so you can see what never left the queue.
  • AI-generated titles and descriptions from specs, editable before posting, so copy is ready when the extension loads again.
  • Facebook photo picker once the Facebook session is healthy; do not fight photo selection while the panel itself is missing.
  • Personal and per-rep queues, manager assignment for associates, and a team queue view so another authorized person can take a unit if this PC stays broken.

After it loads, verify one unit

Queue a single clean vehicle, let the extension finish, and confirm the listing. Then continue. A recovered browser is not a reason to dump the day's backlog in five minutes.

Get Posting Unstuck, Then Keep It Uneventful

A Chrome extension not loading on Facebook is a process problem with a short list of causes. Run the checklist in order, record what you changed, and refuse the folklore that starts with a full reinstall or a password reset.

Once the panel is back, the rest of the job should not depend on heroic typing at a Marketplace form. PostToMarket holds the inventory, the queue, and the listing draft so the extension only has to do the posting. Starter runs $59 per month with one login for a solo seller or independent lot. Dealership runs $299 per month with up to 13 logins when the whole floor needs their own queues.
