What Buyers Should Bring for a Credit Application Visit
A Marketplace buyer who arrives without the right documents burns a test drive and a desk slot. Use this visit checklist, chat script, and store-side prep list so credit application appointments actually complete.
The test drive went fine. The buyer likes the car. Then F&I asks for proof of income and the buyer says it is on a laptop at home. Forty minutes of lot time is gone, the next appointment is in the driveway, and you now have a "be right back" that often never comes back. The failure did not start in the box. It started in the Marketplace thread, when nobody told the buyer what buyers should bring for a credit application visit.
Online leads skip the habits of walk-in traffic. They did not drive past your building for a week. They did not ask a cousin who bought here last year. They asked if the car was available, you booked Saturday at 11:00, and they showed up with a phone and a hope. If financing is even a possible path, the appointment reminder has to carry a document list that matches your actual process.
This article is for GMs, F&I managers, and floor reps. It covers a practical bring-list, how to send it in chat without sounding like a government office, what the store must have ready, and how to handle missing items on arrival. It is operational guidance, not legal advice. Required documents, identity rules, and credit procedures vary by lender, state, and business model. Confirm your list with counsel, your lenders, and your compliance process.
Build One Bring-List That Matches How Your Store Actually Applies
Do not copy a generic internet checklist. If your lenders do not ask for a particular item, do not demand it in Messenger. If they always ask for it, do not leave it off because it feels awkward.
Core items most stores need the buyer to have in hand
Use this as a starting point, then edit to your process:
- A valid driver's license for anyone who will drive the vehicle off the lot, and for the applicant.
- Insurance information if your store requires proof before a test drive or before delivery.
- A callable phone number and a current address they can confirm.
- Down-payment method they actually intend to use, not a theoretical one.
- Trade-in title status and loan payoff information if a trade is part of the plan.
- Income and residence documentation your lenders typically review, described in plain language rather than internal jargon.
If a co-buyer or co-signer is possible, they need their own identity documents and the same class of supporting items. A co-signer who "might stop by later" is not in the deal yet.
Write the list in buyer language
Internal terms do not travel. "POI" and "proof of residency" produce blank stares. Prefer:
- "A recent pay stub or another income document your lender may accept."
- "A document that shows your current address, such as a utility bill or lease, if that is how we verify residence here."
Name categories, not a fake guarantee that any one paper will be enough. Lenders decide what is sufficient.
Separate test-drive items from application items
A buyer who only wants to drive the car should not be told they cannot sit in it without a full credit package. Put two short lists in the reminder:
- To drive: license, and whatever insurance or other drive policy you actually enforce.
- To apply after you like the car: the credit-application items.
That split keeps people from feeling blocked at the curb. It also keeps reps from using the document list as a way to avoid unpromising ups.
For the appointment mechanics around the drive itself, see Test Drive Safety and Scheduling for Online Leads.
How to Send What Buyers Should Bring in a Marketplace Chat
The way you deliver the bring-list matters as much as the list. A wall of demands in the first reply reads like a credit interrogation. A clean list in the confirmation message reads like customer service.
Do not attach it to "is this still available?"
First confirm the vehicle, the price they saw, and a time. Then:
"If you think you may finance, I will send a short list of what to bring so you do not make two trips. You can still just drive the car and decide later."
That permission sentence is what keeps credit-anxious buyers from ghosting.
Send it twice: book message and reminder message
- At booking: the full list, in bullets, plus store address, hours, and which entrance to use.
- The day before or the morning of: the same list, shortened, plus the stock number and the rep's name.
Online leads miss details. Repetition is cheaper than a dead desk slot.
Keep sensitive collection off Messenger
Tell them what to bring. Do not ask them to photograph Social Security cards, full account numbers, or pay stubs into the thread. Your store should already have a controlled way to collect an application. Chat is for logistics.
If the buyer asks why you need items, answer with process, not suspicion: "Lenders ask for these so they can make a decision. I would rather you have them with you than sit in the office while we guess."
A payment-focused cousin of this conversation is Handling Down Payment Questions in Chat. Down payment is often the item people forget even when they remember a license.
Prep the Store So a Credit Application Visit Can Actually Complete
A perfect buyer packet still fails if the desk is not staffed, the unit is in recon, or the listing price is not the desk price.
Store-side checklist before a credit-application visit
| Ready? | Item |
|---|---|
| Unit is on the lot, clean enough to show, and not marked sold in one system and live in another | |
| Key, extra fob if you have it, and a charged battery | |
| Listed cash price matches the figure the desk will use | |
| F&I or the person who takes applications is actually working that shift | |
| Printer, application method, and lender screens the store uses that day | |
| Trade appraiser available if the chat mentioned a trade | |
| A backup unit identified if this one is a poor fit after the drive |
If any row fails, reschedule or disclose before they drive over. A Marketplace lead who took time off work will not forgive a "the finance guy left."
Assign an owner
The rep who booked the visit owns the reminder and the lot-ready check. Managers own the desk coverage. Associates should not be the only people who know a credit visit is coming if they cannot take an application.
Confirm availability the morning of
Sold-pending, wholesale, and "manager drive" units disappear. A 30-second inventory check prevents the worst version of this appointment: documents in hand, car gone.

What to Do When They Arrive Without the List
They will. Plan for it so reps do not improvise a shaming speech in the driveway.
Still run the test drive if your drive policy is satisfied
If they have a valid license and meet your ride-along and insurance rules, show the car. Completing the drive preserves the deal even when the application waits.
Name the missing items without drama
"We can still look at the car. If you want to apply today, we will need X and Y. If those are at home, we can start the paperwork we can start, and you can return with the rest." Do not imply that missing a utility bill means they are not a real buyer.
Decide what you will not fake
Do not submit a thin application just to "get something in" if your lenders will bounce it and burn a pull the buyer did not want. Explain the tradeoff in plain language. Let them choose to wait.
Offer a same-day return window when it is real
If they can be back before the desk closes, set a time. If they cannot, set the next appointment before they leave. "Call me" is how these deals die.
Special Cases Worth a Written Rule
Co-signers and co-buyers
If the chat mentioned another person, the reminder should say that person needs to attend with their own documents if they will be on the application. A parent who "can sign later tonight" often cannot.
Buyers with a preapproval
Ask them to bring the letter or portal details from their bank or credit union. Your desk still has to verify that the preapproval fits the unit and the structure. Do not treat the letter as a closed deal.
Out-of-area buyers
They are the least able to make a second trip. Be extra explicit, and do not add surprise items on arrival that your reminder omitted.
Language and accessibility
Offer to send the list as a short numbered message rather than a PDF they cannot open. If someone cannot easily collect a certain document, do not diagnose that in chat; get them to a person who knows what alternatives your lenders accept.
How PostToMarket Automates This
Wasted credit-application visits usually start with a listing that is wrong, a queue with no owner, or a reminder that never leaves a personal phone. PostToMarket does not collect credit documents and does not replace your F&I process. It keeps the unit, the appointment owner, and the lead in one place so the bring-list you send matches a car that is actually there.
Inventory that matches the appointment
- Statuses of draft, posting, posted, sold, and failed, plus mark as sold and archive, so Saturday's 11:00 is not booked against a unit that sold Friday night.
- Bulk import from CSV or Excel with import history and row-level errors, which is how you stop a bad price or VIN from reaching the buyer who is packing documents.
- Capture from auction and wholesale sites when that is how the car entered inventory, so the spec sheet the desk uses is not a retyped guess.
One owner for the visit
- Personal queues, per-rep queues, and manager assignment to associates, with reps self-queuing from shared inventory.
- Team queue view to see and release a claim if the booking rep is off.
- Leads inbox so managers can confirm that credit-visit chats actually received the bring-list.
Reminders from the lot, not from memory
- Mobile dashboard on a phone home screen, which is how a rep sends the morning-of list between customers.
- AI titles and descriptions you edit before posting, so the vehicle the buyer prepared documents for is the vehicle in the photos.
- Team analytics by rep and source when you want to know which posters generate completed visits instead of no-shows.
PostToMarket is independent and is not affiliated with Meta. It cannot guarantee that a listing will be distributed or that a lender will approve an applicant. It reduces the operational misses that make a prepared buyer look unprepared.
Stop Burning Desk Time on Unprepared Visits
A credit application visit is a scheduled use of F&I, a vehicle, and a rep. Treat it like one. What buyers should bring for a credit application visit should match your lenders, split drive items from apply items, and check the car and the desk the morning of. When someone arrives light on documents, still show the car and reschedule the box with a time, not a shrug.
If those reminders currently live in one salesperson's head, put the inventory and the lead where the whole team can see them. Starter is $59 per month for a solo seller, one login. Dealership is $299 per month for up to 13 logins, which is what you need when the person who booked the visit is not the person covering the desk.
