Voicemail and Text Scripts for Buyers Who Avoid Chat

Some buyers will not stay in Marketplace chat. Use short voicemail and text scripts for buyers who avoid chat, with a clear next step and a stop rule so you do not chase them off.

Voicemail and Text Scripts for Buyers Who Avoid Chat

A buyer asks two questions in Marketplace chat, gives a phone number, and then never types another word. The rep keeps pinging the thread. The manager asks why the lead went cold. Nobody called, because the culture of the desk is "they messaged, so we message back."

Plenty of serious shoppers hate typing on a phone while they are at work, driving, or sitting next to a spouse who has not been looped in yet. Voicemail and text scripts for buyers who avoid chat are how you meet that preference without turning into a spam account. The job is to leave a short, specific next step, then stop.

This is a floor-ops guide for BDC staff, sales reps, and managers. It is not a claim that a clever voicemail closes cars. It is a way to stop losing people who already raised their hand. Confirm calling and texting consent practices with counsel; this is not legal advice, and rules vary by state and by channel.

When Voicemail and Text Scripts for Buyers Who Avoid Chat Should Replace More Typing

Do not abandon chat because you prefer the phone. Abandon chat when the buyer has signaled they will not live there.

Signals it is time to leave the thread

  • They gave a number and asked you to call.
  • They answered once, then went quiet for a stretch that is long for that time of day, after you already offered two appointment windows in chat.
  • They said they are at work, driving, or "just text me."
  • They started the inquiry from a listing but asked for a callback in the first message.

Stay in chat when they are still asking vehicle questions in complete sentences. Switching channels too early can feel like a bait-and-switch, especially if they chose Marketplace specifically to avoid a sales call. For the mechanics of asking without pushing, see asking buyers for a phone number without pushing and moving a Marketplace chat to text or phone smoothly.

One owner, one channel at a time

The person who owns the listing thread owns the first call and the first text, unless they transfer it. Do not have chat, text, and a manager voicemail all fire in the same hour from three people. The buyer will treat that as harassment even if every message is polite.

Write the sequence:

  1. Chat acknowledgement if they are still in the thread.
  2. One call attempt in a reasonable window.
  3. If no answer, one voicemail and one text that say the same next step.
  4. One follow-up the next working period.
  5. Stop, unless they re-engage.

That is a conservative operating standard for your store, not a published platform rule.

What the scripts must contain

Every voicemail and every text should include:

  • Your name and the dealership name.
  • The exact vehicle (year, make, model, and one identifier such as color or stock if you use it with retail buyers).
  • Why you are calling (they asked about it).
  • One next step (two time choices, or a request to reply YES for a callback window).
  • How to reach you back, and the hours you actually answer.

Leave out: payment hypotheticals, "we have lenders fighting for your business," pressure about other buyers unless that is a fact you can defend, and anything about financing terms you have not structured.

Voicemail Scripts You Can Actually Leave in Under Twenty Seconds

Long voicemails get deleted. Assume they will listen once, on speaker, in a parking lot.

Script A: they asked you to call

Hi, this is Jordan at Riverside Motors. You asked about the 2016 F-150 we have listed. It is still here. I can have it ready at 5:30 today or 10:00 tomorrow. Call or text me at this number and tell me which works.

Script B: they went quiet after giving a number

Hi, this is Jordan at Riverside Motors. You were asking about the silver 2018 Equinox. I have two openings to show it, 4:00 today or 11:00 Saturday. Reply to my text or call me back and I will hold a slot.

Script C: the unit is pending or sold

Hi, this is Jordan at Riverside Motors. Calling about the 2017 Camry you messaged on. That one just moved. I have two similar sedans in the same range and can send photos or show them this evening. Call or text if you want those details.

Honesty here is cheaper than a surprise on the lot.

Script D: they wanted more photos, not a pitch

Hi, this is Jordan at Riverside Motors. You asked for extra photos of the 2015 Tacoma. I texted three more, including the bed and the odometer. If you want a walkaround video or a time to see it, reply to the text and I will send it.

Delivery rules

  • Call from the number you will answer. A blocked or rotating number trains people to ignore you.
  • Do not leave a second voicemail the same day.
  • If you reach a full mailbox, send the text and log it. Do not keep retrying every twenty minutes.
  • Match the vehicle. A voicemail about the wrong truck is how you get reported as spam in the buyer's mind, even if you never posted anything improper.

For a broader internet-lead voicemail pattern that is not Marketplace-specific, see voicemail scripts for internet leads. Rewrite; do not clone.

Voicemail and Text Scripts for Buyers Who Avoid Chat: The Text Side

Text is not a second Messenger. Keep it shorter than the voicemail and make the reply effortless.

Script 1: two times

Jordan at Riverside Motors — following up on the 2016 F-150 you asked about. Still here. 5:30 today or 10:00 tomorrow? Reply 1 or 2 and I will have it pulled up.

Script 2: they said text only

Got it, I will text instead of calling. The Equinox is available. Want me to send a 60-second walkaround or book a visit? Reply VIDEO or VISIT.

Script 3: after a missed call

Just called about the Camry you messaged us on. No need to call back if this is a bad time. Text a window that works and I will call then.

Script 4: closing the loop

Last note from me on the Tacoma unless you want more info. If you still want to see it this week, reply YES and a day.

"Last note" only works if it is actually last. If you text again the next morning, you trained them that your stop rule is fake.

Text hygiene

  • One topic per text. Do not stack price, trade, credit, and appointment in a single block.
  • Do not send photos of other people's deals, paperwork, or license plates.
  • If they opt out or ask you to stop, stop. Log it. Confirm your store's consent and opt-out process with counsel; do not improvise legal language in the thread.
  • Save the thread in whatever log you use so the greeter is not asking the same questions at the door.

A small checklist before you hit send

  • Correct year, make, model
  • Unit still posted / not sold
  • Number matches what the buyer gave
  • One next step, not three
  • You can answer if they call back in the next hour

Cadence, Logging, and the Point Where You Stop

Scripts fail when the follow-up plan is "keep trying until they buy or block you."

A conservative sequence (illustrative)

Consider a lot that takes a number on Tuesday at 11 a.m.:

  1. Tuesday 11:15 — call. Voicemail plus matching text if no answer.
  2. Tuesday late afternoon — nothing else unless they reply.
  3. Wednesday late morning — one follow-up text or one call, not both unless they asked for a call.
  4. Thursday — stop, with the "last note" text only if you did not already send one.

Weekend shoppers may need the second touch on Saturday if the first was Friday night. Adjust the calendar, not the number of pokes.

What to log so the next person is not starting over

  • Channel they preferred (chat, text, voice).
  • Times offered.
  • Whether the unit was still available when you called.
  • Exact words of any "I'll get back to you" so the next rep does not treat it as a fresh up.

If the buyer returns to Marketplace chat after you called, answer there. Do not scold them for using the channel they started on.

Manager audit questions

Once a week, sample ten "gave number, went quiet" leads:

  • Did one person own the sequence?
  • Did voicemail and text match?
  • Did anyone keep texting after a stop request or a last note?
  • Did sold units still get "still available" calls?

You are coaching process, not inventing a contact-rate trophy.

How PostToMarket Automates This

Buyers who avoid chat still originated on a specific vehicle with a specific poster. The operational failure is losing that pairing once the conversation leaves Messenger. PostToMarket keeps the vehicle, the queue owner, and the inquiry together so a voicemail is a continuation of a listing, not a random desk call. It is not affiliated with Meta, and it cannot make Facebook users pick up the phone.

Keep the vehicle attached to the human who will call

  • Personal and per-rep queues so the person who posted the unit is the default owner of the callback.
  • Managers assign vehicles to associate queues; sales reps self-queue when they will own the conversation.
  • Team queue view to release a claim when the owner is with a customer and the buyer asked for a same-day call.

Do not call on a car that already sold

  • Statuses (draft, posting, posted, sold, failed) and mark as sold / archive from inventory or the queue so Script C is based on a real state, not a rumor from the lot.

Give the caller facts without digging through a DMS printout at a red light

  • AI titles and descriptions from specs, editable before posting, so the voicemail can mention the actual truck, not a generic "vehicle you inquired about."
  • Photo picker so the follow-up text can promise extra shots you actually have.
  • Mobile dashboard to reorder the queue between customers and make the call from the floor instead of waiting for a desk shift.
  • Leads inbox so managers can see which inquiries never received the promised callback.

The extension still posts one vehicle at a time with human-like delays and server-enforced daily limits. That is the listing side. The phone side only works if the inventory state is clean when you dial.

Stop Typing Into a Dead Thread When They Already Gave You a Number

If the buyer left chat, more chat is not persistence. It is noise. Install voicemail and text scripts for buyers who avoid chat, a named owner, and a stop rule. Then spend the recovered time on people who are still asking questions.

PostToMarket puts unlimited inventory, AI listing copy, bulk import, and per-rep queues under one login model so the person who posts is the person who can call. Starter at $59 per month is one login for a solo seller who is the entire BDC. Dealership at $299 per month is up to 13 logins when voicemail and text have to be owned across a floor.
