Choosing the Title Status Field: Clean Rebuilt or Salvage

Clean, rebuilt, and salvage are not interchangeable, and a rebuilt is not a clean title with a footnote. How to choose the title status field and keep copy aligned with the brand.

Choosing the Title Status Field: Clean Rebuilt or Salvage

A rebuilt Camry sits in retail after a proper recon. The title in the jacket says rebuilt. The DMS title field still says clean because that is the default and nobody overwrote it after the auction. The listing goes live with clean title in the form and a buried sentence about "prior damage, professionally repaired." The buyer who wanted a clean title books a visit. The buyer who would have shopped rebuilt never saw the filter. You now have the wrong appointment and a disclosure argument in the driveway.

Choosing the title status field — clean, rebuilt, or salvage — is not a merchandising preference. It is a statement about the brand on the paper in the deal jacket. Rebuilt is not clean with extra photos. Salvage is not rebuilt because you intend to repair it. The field has to match the title you will transfer, not the title you wish you had.

This is operational guidance, not legal advice. Title brands, rebuild inspections, and advertising rules differ by state and change. Confirm with counsel or your state regulator. Check current Meta commerce policies and Marketplace rules. Do not use this article as a substitute for reading the actual title.

Why the Title Status Field Is Not a Marketing Lever

Buyers filter on title status. Insurers and lenders care. Your state cares. A wrong field is not "optimistic copy."

Clean means unbranded in the sense your process uses

On the lot, people say "clean title" to mean "not salvage." On a title, brands are specific. Lemon, flood, rebuilt, salvage, and other brands are not interchangeable. If the paper carries a brand, the Marketplace field cannot say clean.

If the form's options are coarser than your state's brand list, pick the closest accurate option and state the actual brand in the description with counsel-approved language.

Rebuilt is not salvage, and salvage is not "as-is clean"

  • Salvage generally means the vehicle is branded as salvage and often not yet rebuilt or not eligible to be plated as a rebuilt until an inspection process is complete. Do not advertise salvage as rebuilt because recon is scheduled.
  • Rebuilt (or reconstructed, depending on the state) generally means a salvage path that has completed the required process and now carries a rebuilt-branded title. It is still not a clean title.
  • Clean means the title you will transfer does not carry those brands. It does not mean "never had a scratch."

If you are unsure which box applies, stop posting and read the title. Guessing is how you create the expensive visit.

Defaults and auction comments are not the title

Auction lanes use their own damage language. A "repairable salvage" comment is not your retail title status after you title the car in your state. The document in the jacket wins. Choosing the Title Status Field: Clean, Rebuilt, or Salvage

Walk this in order. Do not start from the price you want to advertise.

Step 1: Read the current title (or the title you will issue)

  • Whose name is on it, and which state?
  • What brand, if any, is printed?
  • Is there a pending brand, bonded title, or other exception in the jacket?

If the title is not in yet, do not default to clean. Hold the listing in draft until the paper exists or counsel has a written rule for advertising units in transit.

Step 2: Map the brand to the form

Paper (illustrative)Typical fieldDescription
Unbranded titleCleanDo not volunteer fake brands. Do not hide real ones.
Rebuilt / reconstructedRebuiltSay rebuilt near the top. Invite on-site title review.
SalvageSalvageDo not call it rebuilt. State that it is salvage.
Flood, lemon, or other named brandClosest form option; never cleanName the actual brand in text with approved language

If the form only offers clean vs. salvage, a rebuilt unit is not clean. Use salvage only if that is the honest parent option your process allows; otherwise use whatever option the form provides for rebuilt and explain. Do not pick clean because it "sells better."

Step 3: Align price, photos, and title text

  • Price a branded title as a branded title. A clean-title price on a rebuilt field still feels like bait.
  • Photos should include repaired areas when you have them, not a gallery that pretends the car was never touched. Honesty is operational, not a slogan.
  • Titles and headlines: do not put "clean title" on a rebuilt. You may put "rebuilt title" in the title so the right buyer self-selects.

Step 4: Align the deal jacket and buyer's guide

The listing is an advertisement. It must not contradict the guide and the jacket. Online Vehicle Listing Compliance Basics for Dealers is the broader discipline. Title status is one of the fields that must survive that cross-check.

Floor Rules That Keep Brands From Being "Clean by Default"

DMS hygiene

Make title status a required field in your export cleanup. A blank that defaults to clean is the failure mode in the opening story. Train that changing a unit from wholesale salvage to retail rebuilt is a data event, not just a recon event.

Who may post branded titles

Associates should not be the last eyes on salvage or rebuilt listings unless a manager has already set the field. Put branded units in a manager-reviewed queue path.

What never belongs in the listing

  • "Clean title" as a keyword on a branded vehicle.
  • "Rebuilt" on a salvage title you have not rebuilt.
  • "Frame never damaged" if you do not know that.
  • "Insurance total, but it was minor" as a way to talk shoppers out of the brand. The brand is the brand.

Out-of-state titles

A brand in another state may convert differently when you retitle. Do not advertise the destination brand until it exists. Advertise what you have, or wait. Confirm with counsel. This is not legal advice.

Buyer Conversations After the Field Is Honest

Honest fields attract fewer, better visits. Expect questions:

  • Why was it branded?
  • Can it be insured or financed? You may describe what buyers commonly do, but do not promise a lender or carrier outcome you do not control.
  • Can they see the title and repair records on site? Yes. Have the jacket ready.

A listing that hid the brand produces a hotter conversation. A listing that led with rebuilt produces a shorter one.

How PostToMarket Automates This

Wrong title status reaches Marketplace when a default travels from the DMS into a fast post. The fix is a vehicle record that can sit in draft until the title is read, copy you can edit so "rebuilt" is not optional, and a queue where managers control branded units.

PostToMarket does not read titles for you and does not certify brands. It keeps inventory, draft copy, photos, and assignment in one workflow so the field can match the jacket. It is independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Meta.

Hold the unit until the paper matches the record

  • Statuses: draft, posting, posted, sold, failed. Branded units should not leave draft on a clean default.
  • CSV/Excel import with row-level error logs when title status is blank.
  • Auction and wholesale capture into inventory, then overwrite auction comments with the actual title when it arrives.
  • Mark as sold and archive so a branded listing does not stay up after the unit is gone.

Words and photos that do not hide the brand

  • AI titles and descriptions from specs, editable before posting. If title status is on the record, the edit pass is where you make the brand visible, not buried.
  • Facebook photo picker for repair and underbody shots that support an honest rebuilt story.

Roles

  • Managers assign rebuilt and salvage units to trained associates.
  • Reps self-queue clean-title retail when that is your policy.
  • Team queue view to release a claim if the field is still wrong.
  • Chrome extension, one vehicle at a time, human-like delays, server-enforced limits.
  • Leads inbox for the "is this a clean title?" threads you would rather not generate.

No tool can guarantee reach, and no tool makes a rebuilt title into a clean one. Correct fields reduce the operational mistake of advertising the wrong brand.

Pick the Box That Matches the Paper

Choosing the title status field — clean, rebuilt, or salvage — is a document task. If the jacket says rebuilt, the listing says rebuilt. If the title is still salvage, the listing does not get to be optimistic.

PostToMarket is for teams that want that document task attached to inventory, queues, and editable listing copy. The Starter plan at $59 per month is one login for a solo seller or independent lot. The Dealership plan at $299 per month is up to 13 logins for a floor that splits manager review and associate posting.
